ELK MOUND, Wis. — Melba Lorraine (Myren) Fox of Elk Mound passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in her home. She was the second born of four siblings Nov. 20, 1927, in Pleasant Valley, Eau Claire County to Theodore and Mathilda (Bollinger) Myren.

Melba was an amazing woman who touched so many lives. She always had a way of making everyone feel so special. Because of her kindness, her compassion, and her strong Christian faith, many lives have been changed for the better. Melba has truly made a difference in the lives of her family and those around her.

Melba grew up on the family farm with her three brothers. At age 14, after her freshman year, Melba lost her mother. After the loss of her mother, her father was disabled for many months due to a farm accident. Melba took a year off of school to help care for her dad, cook for her brothers, and help with farming activities. When returning to high school she worked as a nanny and then at the Washington Sanitarium for room and board until she graduated from high school in 1946.

Melba married John Fox Dec. 29, 1948. They were life-long members of St Matthew Lutheran Church (Melba since her confirmation). John and Melba’s home easily became not only a family gathering place but also a home for siblings as they were growing up along with John and Melba’s children. Even with this busy schedule, Melba worked at various jobs including 13 years at Uniroyal as a tire splicer. Melba was an amazing cook, however it was sometimes hard to pass on her recipes because her directions were “just add a little bit of this or a little bit of that” or “just add until it seems right.”

After retirement, Melba and John spent time traveling the country visiting Alaska and wintering in Texas as well as Arizona. John passed away in June of 2016. Melba continued her many hobbies including crossword puzzles and reading, sometimes well into the night. She loved and knew the many birds she fed in her backyard. She also volunteered at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and Bethesda Thrift Store in Eau Claire.

Melba loved all of her family, especially attending activities that included her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other extended family. Melba was competitive in playing games like Spoons, Skip-Bo, 500, and Aggravation. The Quote “ Live well, Laugh often, Love much” certainly describes how Melba lived her life. When visiting their home, Melba made sure we all said our proper goodbyes which included hugs and goodbye waves as you left the driveway. With that in mind, we all give our final hug and goodbye wave to this amazing woman until we meet again.

Melba is survived by two of her four children, daughter, Barb (Don) Prochnow; son, Steve (Mary) Fox; son-in-law, Bob Kilde; grandchildren, Tami (John) Hodgkins, Angie Prochnow (Cynthia LeBlanc), Tanya (Paul) Dean, Tim Kilde, Katina Lacey, Rachel Kilde, John (Jessica) Kilde, Heather (Ben) Miles, Josh (Emily) Kilde, Amber Fox, Alyssa Fox; great-grandchildren, Zack and Bella Hodgkins, Connor and Emma Dean, Jaron Lacey, Dominic and Khloe Kilde, Gwyn and Oscar Miles with baby Miles due in November; siblings, Vern (Gladys) Myren, Vern grew up in the Fox home; sister-in-law, Florence (Ben) Hayden.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, of 67 years, John; two daughters, Cindy Kilde and Colleen Fox; grandson-in-law, Tom Lacey; brothers, Delbert (Gerd) Myren, Robert (Shirley) Myren; brothers-in-law, Raymond, Malcolm, and George Fox; and sister and brother–in-law, Margaret (Ken) Mayer.
