The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. announces it has named Hannah Brown, a senior at Brown’s International Homeschool in Menomonie, as the third-place national winner and recipient of the $10,000 VFW Scholarship award in its 2017-18 Voice of Democracy Scholarship program. VFW Post 1039 and its Auxiliary in Menomonie sponsored Brown.
The Voice of Democracy audio-essay program requires entrants to write and record a three- to five-minute script on a democratic and patriotic theme. This year’s theme challenged students to reflect on “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” Each year, nearly 40,000 students participate in the Voice of Democracy program worldwide, with national finalists competing for their share of $154,000 in scholarships and awards.
“For 71 years, the Voice of Democracy program has been a sacred part of our organization because the VFW believes America’s future lies in the hands of our youth,” said VFW National Commander Keith Harman. “After hearing this year’s submissions I’m confident America’s future is safe in the hands of today’s exceptionally bright and patriotic youth.”
