Someone has been using mailboxes for nighttime target practice near and along County Highway C in Menomonie.
A man living in the N2000 block of 510th Street contacted the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office the morning of Feb. 13 to report that his recently replaced mailbox had been shot and damaged. He told deputies his mailbox had been shot at before.
Deputies located several other mailboxes that had been shot by someone heading north on 510th and County Highway C. A 12-gauge red hull for a 7.5 load shot load was discovered by deputies at a mailbox on County C. It matched one found — along with about 50 empty shells and some .22 shells — that were also found in a parking lot at the end of 524th Street by the railroad trestle bridge in the Dunnville Bottoms.
A woman who lives in the E6000 block of County Highway C contacted the sheriff’s office on Feb. 16 to report a similar incident that also took place on Feb. 13. She said she found small footprints in the snow near the mailbox and had found a 12 gauge hull that did, however, match the same shells found earlier that week.
A total of five mailboxes with an estimated value of $50 each were damaged.
