Semi crash on Chippewa River bridge closes westbound lanes of I-94

A Thursday morning crash involving two semis on I-94 near Eau Claire resulted in more crashes that still had the westbound lanes of the interstate closed as of 3 p.m. as clean-up continued.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the initial crash took place as a light snow fell on the Chippewa River bridge at 9:50 a.m. at mile marker 65. The crash caused a complete closure of the westbound lanes which resulted in several secondary crashes. A total of six commercial motor vehicles, five automobiles and one pick-up were involved, and four people were transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic from I-94 was rerouted onto Highway 53 north where more crashes have occurred due to the increased traffic volume and worsening road conditions. The crash remains under investigation.

During the winter months, the State Patrol reminds motorists that the crash “is a stark reminder of staying alert to changing roadway conditions and maintaining safe speeds when traveling.”
