Menomonie Public Library is pairing with UW-Stout's FAB LAB and Discovery Center to offer a course to introduce community members to digital design and fabrication.

A free course, Introduction to Design for Digital Fabrication, will teach community members the basics of 2D and 3D modeling and digital design and serves as a prerequisite to the rest of the classes in the series, which will be available in 2014. This is an excellent opportunity for community members to get exposed to the skills needed in order to use the FAB LAB, all for extreme cost savings.

The Discovery Center FAB LAB is part of a global network of labs for creative and innovative people to experiment with designs and prototypes, and is a great place for people who like to build things. The FAB LAB provides access to a variety of tools, including computer-aided design (CAD) and desktop manufacturing technologies such as a laser engraver, 3D printer, mini-mill, vinyl cutter, CNC router, which all help bring ideas to life.

The class will take place from 6-8 p.m. on the following Mondays — Oct. 28, and Nov. 4, 11 and 18 — in the Menomonie Public Library meeting room. Interested folks can sign up on UW-Stout's Professional Education Programs and Services webpage, http://www.uwstout.edu/profed/

Registration is limited to 12 people, so sign up today. You may bring your own laptop, but please install Google SketchUp Make (free download) prior to the first day.

Introduction to Design for Digital Fabrication will be taught by Kevin Dietsche (B.S. Technology Education, M.S. Career and Technical Education, FAB LAB Instructor), who has experience teaching Intro to Drafting and Design, Architectural Drafting, Mechanical Drafting/Design and Engineering Design. Please make sure you will be able to attend most, if not all, of the four classes before registering.
