Jazz fans have a reason to celebrate as the Menomonie High School Jazz Ensemble I returns to the Mabel Tainter stage for "Songs of the Century — From Basie to The Beatles to Bruno" on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The high school’s premier jazz band, directed by Jacob Karkula, is comprised of 19 members selected by audition.
The first half of the concert features big band swing music from the 1930s and 40s made famous by Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington with “Salute to the Big Bands,” a medley of famous songs, plus “Sing Sing Sing,” “In the Mood,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Shiny Stockings,” and “Take the A Train.”
After intermission, the band swings to more contemporary tunes associated with Led Zeppelin, Bruno Mars, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, The Beatles, and the movie “Rocky”—”Stairway to Heaven.” “Uptown Funk,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Hey Jude,” and “Gonna Fly Now (The Theme from ‘Rocky’).”
