UW-Stout place kicker Drew Pearson (Jr, Wausau) completed the trifecta of NCAA Division III level honors when he was named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America Team as a first team selection.
Earlier this summer, Pearson was named preseason All-America by Street and Smith and by Lindy’s.
And the preseason honors are definitely earned, based on Pearson’s performance last season. Pearson, who will begin his junior season, was a 2016 first team D3football.com All-America, a 2016 second AFCA All-America and a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award, an award that honors the top place kickers across the NCAA Division II and III, the NAIA and junior colleges.
Pearson set a school record in making 16-of-19 field goals and made all 27 extra point attempts. Pearson led the team in scoring with 75 points and was a first team all-WIAC pick and the WIAC co-special teams player of the year.
Pearson returns for his third year along with holder Clark Riedel (Sr, Waukesha) and long snapper Clay Dziekan (Jr, Mondovi). Nationally last season, Pearson ranked 12th in field goal percentage (.842) and fourth in field goals made per game (1.60).
Players the Blue Devils will face also named to the D3football.com first and second teams include St. Thomas tight end Jackson Hull, a first team selection, UW-Whitewater center Nate Trewyn, a second team pick, and the Tommies running back John Roberts, a second team choice.
The Blue Devils open the 2017 season Saturday, Sept. 2 when they travel to Simpson College. Stout will host the fifth ranked Tommies, Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1:10 p.m. Defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor is ranked No. 1 in the D3football.com preseason poll. UW-Whitewater is ranked third, UW-Oshkosh fourth and UW-Platteville 15th.
