CUBA CITY - Tim Nelson (Sr, Augusta) successfully defended his Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) cross country crown in winning the event at Cole Acres Golf Course Saturday. UW-Stout finished in fifth place as a team.

Nelson, who won the 2011 event at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, came in with a time of 24-minutes, 34.2-seconds, winning the event by 25 seconds. Nelson’s nearest competitor was UW-La Crosse's Josh Dedering (24:59.7). Last season, Nelson won the event by 11 seconds. Nelson is the 13th individual to collect multiple titles.

Nelson had plenty of help from his teammate. The fifth-place team finish is the best Stout finish at the WIAC Championships since it placed fifth in 1986.

Patrick Jenkins (So, Cambridge) finished 12th (25:24.8), and Mitch Easker (Sr, Antigo) was 13th (25:26.5). Paul VanGrinsven (Jr, Little Chute) finished 44th (26:20.3), Tony Cass (So, Hortonville), 47th (26:71.1), David Ritter (Fr, River Falls), 53rd (26:34.6), and Jacob Olsen (Jr, Mendota Heights, Minn), 55th (26:39.9).

Sean O'Brien (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) was 77th (27:30.4), Kyle Mills (Jr, Rosemount, Minn), 79th (27:30.4), Caleb Mueller (So, Blair), 82nd (27:37.8), Brady McDaniel (Fr, Darlington), 89th (28:00.2) and David Linsmeyer (So, Mauston), 95th (28:18.5).

Nelson also received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award and Easker was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

UW-La Crosse won the team title. UW-Eau Claire was second and host UW-Platteville, third.

The Blue Devils compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals, Saturday, Nov. 10 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
