Senior Madison Davis, middle blocker for the Menomonie Mustang volleyball team, earned second team all-conference honors in the Big Rivers Conference (BRC) for the 2017 season.
Davis led the team in serve aces, digging, passing, blocking and was second in kills to teammate Kylie Mogen. Davis also served as co-captain, along with Delaney Bignell.
The three year varsity player played roles in both the front and back row of the court this season after not playing back row her first two years.
Davis completed her final high school volleyball season along with defensive specialists Anjalee Lor and Delaney Bignell, right-side hitter Eva Olson and outside hitter Zoe Stelter. All five girls will graduate in the spring.
The Mustangs finished the 2017 season with a 12-28 record in matches and 0-6 in the BRC. One highlight of the season for the Mustangs was winning the Mondovi Tournament on Sept. 30. Menomonie went 2-4 in pool play before rallying to defeat Mondovi and Elk Mound to win the tournament.
After receiving the No. 14 seed in the WIAA Division 1 playoffs, Menomonie was defeated by Eau Claire Memorial (25-12, 25-15, 25-21).
“I was proud of the girls that they did not give up during the match, even after being down 2-0,” coach Corey Davis said. “We jumped to a lead in the third set but just couldn’t close it out.”
Though the loss ended their season, the team performed the best they had all year in serve receptions, but just made too many hitting errors. The Mustangs ended the game with 24 kills and 22 hitting errors. Olsen and Mogen led the team in kills with six each, followed by Davis with four.
McKinley Davis led in digs with 15 while Maddie McLeod dished out 18 assists.
