The Menomonie wrestling team defeated the Eau Claire North Huskies 53-22 in what was a short-lived Big Rivers Conference (BRC) matchup at Menomonie High School.
Due to a number of injuries and other unforeseen circumstances for both teams, the evening featured a total of eight forfeits, including one double forfeit. Menomonie’s Jake Boyette (160 pounds), Jacob Haviland (170 lbs), Will Otto (182 lbs), Jaylen Wright (195 lbs), Zach Evenson (106 lbs) and Josh Dahmer (120 lbs) all won their respective matches by forfeit. Menomonie forfeit the 138 pound match to North’s Madison Koob. The double forfeit came at the 113 pound bracket.
Head coach Miah Casey said currently the Mustangs do not have a wrestler at the 113 pound weight, but one individual is currently working his way down to fill that role.
In action matches, the Mustangs saw two athletes defeat their opponents by pin: Sam Skillings over Joe Vang at 152 lbs and Girard Jones over Devon Hollins at 220 lbs. Hollins stepped up from the junior varsity team in place of Sam Thompson, who was unable to compete, and came up with a big pin win for the Mustangs.
“Sam Skillings, that’s just what we expect from him. He goes out there, does his job every time and comes away with the pin,” Casey said. “Our freshman that stepped up, we had Sam Thompson hurt so Jones stepped in there and got a pin for us in his first varsity dual.”
Menomonie’s Chris Haviland also won his match, defeating Cole Pehrson at 145 lbs in a dominating 15-0 decision.
Menomonie lost three matches to North, including Andrew Fenton at 285 lbs to Jamir Johnson by pin, Cole Larson at 132 lbs to Carter Duerkop by pin and Dalton Kadlec at 126 lbs to Ethan Johnson in a 10-2 decision.
The Mustangs travel to Fond Du Lac Saturday for an invitational before heading to Merrill for the Northern Exposure 24 Team Dual on Thursday, Dec. 28.
