Colfax’s softball team split a Dunn-St. Croix Conference doubleheader with Elmwood on Monday, 0-1 and 6-3.
Colfax 0, Elmwood 1
The Vikings struggled to get going in game one as Elmwood pitcher McKayla Brunner struck out eight batters and gave up just three hits in five shutout innings.
“She (Brunner) threw it by us in game one,” said Colfax Coach Joe Doucette. “We had two chances and could not get a good at bat when we needed it.”
Sam Simonson gave the Vikings a second-inning double to lead the team at the plate at 1-for-2. Alexis Rudi and Lakken Meredith each hit 1-for-2. Rudi took the loss, pitching four innings and giving up four hits while striking out one batter.
“Alexis Rudi pitched very well,” said Coach Doucette. “The run they scored was unearned.”

The Vikings pounded out seven hits in the nightcap, leading them to a 6-3 rebound victory. Karina Wait was key to Colfax’s game-two victory, as she hit a lead-off triple and finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and RBI. Alexis Rudi added a 2-for-3, two RBI outing at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
“(Wait and Rudi) were the catalysts for us the whole game,” said Doucette. “Our middle of the order has a bunch of veteran good hitters and they struggled, so it was good to see us hang in there and get a win. … We have a great hitting team, but we need to get going. It’s tough when you have not been outside much, but we know it’s a short season.”
Also earning hits for the Vikings were Meredith and Courtney Ottinger.
Rudi got the win, striking out three batters, walking four and scattering four hits.
