Two Blue Devils land on All-WIAC men’s basketball team

UW-Stout’s Isaac Elliott led the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in scoring and was selected to the All-WIAC honorable mention squad. Fellow senior Sam Ortmann was selected to the WIAC all-defensive team.

Elliott led both the Blue Devils and the WIAC in scoring, finishing the season averaging 16.6 points per contest. Elliott scored in double digits in 21 of 25 games this season and scored 20 or more points in nine games, including six conference games. Elliott, a senior from Stevens Point, finished off his career with a personal-best 28 point effort against UW-Oshkosh. The 28 points came on the heels of a 27 point game the previous outing against UW-La Crosse.

Three times this season, Elliott was perfect from the free throw line in a game, hitting 12-of-12 against UW-La Crosse, 10-of-10 against UW-Ea Claire and 8-of-8 against UW-Oshkosh. For the season, Elliott made 82-of-102 free throws (.804). Elliott finished his career with 861 total points, ranking 39th on the UW-Stout all-time list.

Ortmann was the Blue Devils’ second-leading scorer, averaging 11.8 points per game. Ortmann, a senior from Buffalo, Minn., averaged 3.6 rebounds per game and averaged just under one steal per contest. Ortmann closed out his career with 732 career points.

Junior guard Zach Dahl was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Blue Devils’ Payne wins WIAC title with school record mark

UW-Stout freshman Shaquilla Payne captured the WIAC vault title in school record fashion at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional meet Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Payne, who missed the first month of the season due to injury, tied the school record in the vault with a mark of 9.800, besting the field of 48. The competition was only Payne’s second varsity vault performance of the season.

Payne is the third Blue Devil to win a conference vault title and was the only Blue Devil to earn all-conference honors, which goes to the first six finishers on each event.

MacKenzie Nicholson placed eighth on the uneven bars with a score of 9.600. Kenzie Hyde had a 10th place finish on the vault (9.55)

As a team, Stout placed eighth with 183.825 points. UW-La Crosse edged UW-Whitewater for the team title. Hamline University finished third to earn the final team bid to the NCGA Championship, which is scheduled for March 23-24 at Springfield (Mass) College.

Four Blue Devils selected to All-WIAC Hockey Team

A defenseman, a goalie and two forwards from UW-Stout were selected to the 2017-18 All-WIAC Men’s Hockey team.

Defenseman Mathias Ahman and goalie Tommi Ahlgren were first team selections, while forwards Dylan Zins and Hunter Anderson were selected to the honorable mention team. Blue Devil head coach Terry Watkins was selected as the WIAC co-coach of the year and goalie Etienne Roy was selected to receive the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

Adam Kresl was selected to the All-Sportsmanship team.

The Blue Devils advanced to the WIAC tournament semi-final round this season. Stout split the series with Eau Claire, but lost the mini-game, 1-0, to see their season end. Stout finished the conference season with a 3-5 record. Watkins received the coach of the year award for the third time in the WIAC.
