Although it doesn't seem like it as I am writing this, spring is just around the corner, I think, and it seems like things are waking up again with the warmer temperatures, right along with Mother Nature.

The Big Read will begin soon. Our community-wide read of F. Scott Fitzgerald's American classic The Great Gatsby is coming up, kicking off on Thursday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts.  The evening features a presentation by UW-Stout professor Joan Navarre that will give us some background on Fitzgerald and the book.

Following the presentation, the group Belle Amour from Minneapolis will perform vintage jazz from the period.  All Big Read events are free, but seating in the theater is limited so we are requesting that patrons get their tickets in advance at the Mabel Tainter box office.

Other events are planned throughout the month of April include a full performance of the text, word-for-word, on the Mabel Tainter stage on Sunday, April 14.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Elk Mound library

The Village of Elk Mound has purchased a building that will be renovated for a combined library and community center.  The library has been running a pickup location in Elk Mound out of the village hall since last May.

Acquiring a building for a library is a milestone.  Village volunteers have been working on this project for several years and they are making it happen.

Having the library in a larger space will allow us to offer more service, like a small collection of books, newspapers, magazines and Internet computers.

If you have an interest in helping by donating time or money, please contact the village at 715-879-5011 or www.elk-mound.org.
