Mayo Clinic Health System - Red Cedar announces it recently received an internal endowment grant to fund ImPACT concussion baseline testing and ImPACT education for providers in 2013. The grant allows extending testing to youth and middle school student-athletes from communities that participate in the Sports Medicine program as well as those from UW-Stout. It also allows for continued support of high school student-athletes.

“We are pleased to expand this program to include youth and collegiate student-athletes,” says Jodi Dotseth, director of Red Cedar Physical Rehabilitation in Menomonie. “In the past, baseline testing was available to these groups for a small fee. Beginning in 2013, they can also be tested for free.”

Mayo Clinic Health System - Red Cedar provides free Sports Medicine outreach to Boyceville, Colfax, Elmwood, Glenwood City and Menomonie high schools. It has provided free ImPACT concussion baseline testing for student-athletes at these schools since 2008.

The ImPACT program is a sports concussion management program that helps assist medical professionals to accurately detect and treat concussions in student-athletes. Athletes participate in baseline testing prior to the start of their sports season, which assesses key functions affected by a concussion. If an athlete experiences a concussion during the season, he/she is retested, and the provider compares the post-concussion data with baseline data to determine the post-concussion neurocognitive status and a safe to return to activity plan.
