The life and work of James Bakkom, a Minneapolis artist and film production designer, will be the focus of two events at University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Furlong Gallery.

The documentary, “Getting Lost in My Own Art” by Mark Wojahn will be shown at the gallery at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28.

The short film covers Bakkom’s life growing up in Wisconsin, his early work as a cowboy artist in South Dakota and later as a production designer in Minnesota, including for the films “Sweet Land” and “Detective Fiction.” Bakkom, now semiretired, has returned to his roots as an artist.

Thursday’s showing will be the Wisconsin premiere for the documentary. It premiered in Minnesota at the Twin Cities Film Fest in 2012 and on Minnesota Public Television in January.

The screening will be preceded by a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at Furlong Gallery, with Bakkom and Wojahn scheduled to attend.

The event also will kick off the exhibit “The Creative World of James Bakkom,” which runs through March 29 featuring production drawings, paintings, film stills and video.

Both events and the exhibit are free and open to the public. Furlong Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily on the first floor of Micheels Hall.
