The term “hunger banquet” is a classic oxymoron but a perfect way to describe an event coming up at UW-Stout.

The fifth annual Oxfam America Hunger Banquet will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center.

Students from the Trade Show Management class, part of the School of Hospitality Leadership, are hosting the event.

It’s no ordinary banquet. The goal is to educate attendees about poverty, hunger and social injustice in 94 countries. Attendees will receive a random low-, middle- or high-income card. This will determine whether they sit on the floor, on a chair or at a table and which kind of meal they receive.

Just 10 percent of attendees will be high-income, representative of society as a whole.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Proceeds will go to the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association to help replenish its rice pantry.

Oxfam America is one of 17 organizations that make up Oxfam International.
