EAU CLAIRE — A little girl was welcomed to the world as the first baby of the new year at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.
The baby, who is not yet named, was born at 1:56 a.m. Jan. 1, 2013. She weighed in at 5 pounds and 3 ounces and was 18.75 inches long.
Ahood Alzahofi and Bader Shwikan of Menomonie are the proud parents. Alzahofi, 28, and Shwikan, 29, originally are from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. They both are full-time students at UW-Stout, where Alzahofi studies dietetics and Shwikan studies electrical engineering. This is the couple’s second child. She joins big brother, Talal, who is 3.
Alzahofi said she was feeling well after her Cesarean-section delivery early in the morning of Jan. 1. When they heard the baby’s cry, the couple said they were crying too, happy to hear their daughter’s voice.
“We are very excited, very happy,” Shwikan said, noting that this is the first girl in his family.
The couple is considering the names Rama or Danah for their daughter, who was awake and wide-eyed when area media took pictures the afternoon of Jan. 1 of Eau Claire’s official first baby of 2013.
