Jerome (Jerry) W. Hayes, Chippewa Falls, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Eau Claire. Although his death was unexpected, he lived a full and happy life.
Jerry was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Wahpeton, N.D. and grew up in the Barron County area raised by his parents, Eddie and Vernie Stertz. As a young man, he served in the Army and would later work for the City of Chippewa Falls. Jerry ended his working career as an electrician. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers and the Knights of Columbus.
Jerry married Bonnie Anger Jan. 18, l969. With her four children and three of his own, their households merged into one. Soon they would add one more child to an already full house. At the time of his death, Jerry and Bonnie were blessed with 48 years of marriage.
Jerry enjoyed the outdoors, and spent countless hours hunting and fishing. Antiquing was another of his favorite pastimes. He was a familiar face at area auctions and sales. Jerry was a collector of sorts; one was never quite sure of what treasures he would bring home. He took pride in finding a bargain. But most of all, Jerry loved his family and the time he spent with them. Picnics and water fun were common at the family’s home on the lake. His presence will be deeply missed.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Barbara (Bonnie) Hayes; his children, Carrie (Bob) Flottum, Jeff (Wendy) Hayes, Scott Hayes, Michael (Desiree) Hayes; his stepchildren, Chuck (Kathy) Anger, Kim (Terry) Benzschawel, Carol (Tim) Culliton, Bonnie (Scott) Nicolai; fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Roger (Kay) Stertz; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents; one brother, and two grandchildren preceded him in death.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Home, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, in Altoona with Fr. Dan Thelen officiating. Friends and family may gather prior to the service beginning at 3 pm.
