Two former City of Cornell workers each face four felony counts of misconduct in office and four misdemeanor charges of theft of movable property in Chippewa County Court.
John E. Westaby, 56, of Cornell is scheduled to appear before Judge Steve Gibbs at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14. Brandon J. Larson, 35, of Holcombe is scheduled to go before Judge Steven Cray at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12.
According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office: Cornell city Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer David DeJongh contacted the sheriff’s office on Sept. 26 about a theft of city-owned property, possibly by two city employees. City-owned property was recovered during the investigation.
The city of Cornell issued this statement: “We suspected thievery in the Public Works Department, so we contacted an outside agency, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office. Their investigation confirmed our suspicions. John Westaby admitted to stealing from the city. He has been terminated. Another employee, Brandon Larson, assisted John. He also has been terminated.”
