HOLMEN — The Chi-Hi boys tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 victory over Holmen on the road on Tuesday.
First-year JV coach Alex Mazur took over for the first varsity dual of the season, and the Cardinals rewarded him with a win. Per the team's Twitter account, head coach Brian Flynn had a family emergency, forcing Mazur to take the reins for the first time. He played for the Cardinals last year as a senior at Chi-Hi.
The Cardinals won three of the singles matches to help power them to the overall victory. No. 2 singles Simon Arneberg, No. 3 Eli Marticorena and No. 4 Mitch Vanyo all won in straight sets.
The No. 3 doubles team of Jacob Klages and Nick Mason defeated Holmen's Kyler Peterson and Xue Xiong 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 for Chi-Hi's only doubles win. It was the only one the Cardinals would need.
Chi-Hi returns to action on the road against Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday afternoon.
