MENOMONIE — The Chi-Hi wrestling team opened its season with a victory by the slimmest of margins on Thursday, edging Menomonie 36-35 in a Big Rivers Conference dual.
Chi-Hi won five consecutive matches during the dual to take control of the contest with a late pin helping in the win.
“It was a nice win to start of the season,” Chi-Hi coach Tom Pomietlo said. “Several young wrestlers stepped up when we needed them the most.”
Brady Weyandt (126 pounds), Owen James (132), Dylan Schimmel (152) and Matthew Pomietlo (182) all won by pinfall for the Cardinals. Chi-Hi also picked up wins by injury and forfeit for the win over the Mustangs.
“It was thrilling to watch Owen earn his first varsity pin to win the watch. He has put in a lot of extra time to improve,” Pomietlo said. “That is the story of this year’s team, we have a lot of new faces who are willing to work hard to improve.
“Brady is another new starter who contributed in big way. Overall, I think our team conditioning played a factor in our win.”
Chi-Hi returns to action on Saturday an invitational in Stratford.
