The McDonell/Regis soccer team and its defense started out its season as well as you can.
McDonell/Regis got a first half goal from Grant Pulver and the defense did the rest of the work, shutting out Barron 1-0 in their season opener on Tuesday at Casper Park.
“I feel we played good soccer for the first game,” McDonell/Regis coach Tim Jenneman said. “But a lot of work to do yet.”
Pulver tallied a goal at the 25-minute mark on a pass from Sam Vandehaar. Matt Steiger made eight saves in goal to get the shutout.
“Our defense gets the game ball — Mike Kozuch, Andrew Klimek, Robert Ochs, Matt Pulver and goalie Matt Steiger,” Jenneman said. “I thought they stepped it up and now have to keep improving.”
McDonell/Regis returns to action Thursday when they play in a triangular at Amery.
Chi-Hi goes 2-0 at home triangular
At Chi-Hi, the Cardinals scored sizable wins over Holmen (7-0) and Durand (5-2) in a home triangular.
Each of the four singles players (No. 1 Sarah Wallace, No. 2 Maggie Gibson, No. 3 Julia Nunes and No. 4 Suzy Fastner) went 2-0 on the day, with only one of their eight singles matches going to a third set.
Chi-Hi coach Russ Borman said a slight lineup tweak combined with the good play of his team helped lead to the solid day.
“The girls played really, really well again today,” Borman said.
In doubles action the No. 3 doubles team of Mikayla Ferg and Bailey Bengtson went 2-0 on the day.
“My team has very strong potential and they are capable of winning a lot of matches (this year),” Borman said.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday in an invitational at Eau Claire North.
