MINNEAPOLIS — Austin Gjestson and the 200 medley relay team each got first place finishes for the Menomonie boys swimming team at an invitational hosted at the University of Minnesota on Saturday.

Gjestson took first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.12 seconds while the winning 200 medley relay team consisting of Kaleb Kazmarek, Kevin Leach, Adam Giljohann and Juan Carlos Mezquita Lobato finished their race in 1:45.61.

Taking runner-up finishes was Leach (200 individual medley) and Kazmarek (100 backstroke), while Gjestson (200 freestyle), Leach (100 breaststroke) and the 200 freestyle relay (Giljohann, Christian Bilse, Gjestson and Kazmarek) placed third.

Coming in fourth was Bilse (100 butterfly) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Leach, Gjestson, Bilse and Mezquita Lobato. Mezquita Lobato took fifth in the 100 freestyle.

The Mustangs finished third as a team with a score of 361 as Delano/Watertown/Mayer (Minn.) won the event (560).

Menomonie hosts a home dual against Eau Claire North on Thursday before traveling to Wausau East on Friday.

Boys Basketball

Elk Mound 60, Arcadia 56

At Arcadia, the Mounders edged the Raiders in a nonconference game to earn their second victory on the season.

Elk Mound (2-5) was led by 19 points from Ben Health and 17 from Cade Hanson. Michael Jenson added six and Cole Steinhorst five.

Ethan Weltzien led Arcadia (0-7) with 14 points.

Elk Mound plays at Elmwood/Plum City on Tuesday before hosting Glenwood City on Friday.

Boys Hockey

Superior 8, Menomonie 2

At Superior, the Mustangs dropped a nonconference game to the Spartans.

Menomonie (3-8) returns to Big Rivers action with a game at Hudson on Tuesday.


Bloomer/Colfax undefeated at Dragon Duals

At Osseo, Bloomer/Colfax went 5-0 at the Dragon Duals hosted by Osseo-Fairchild.

Bloomer/Colfax got wins over Arcadia (57-18), Black River Falls (45-24), Independence/Gilmanton (45-27), Mondovi (54-24) and Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek (57-24).

Brison Tuschl (106 pounds), Luke Blanchard (113), Sawyer Best (132) and Bowen Rothbauer (160) each went 5-0 on the day. Alex Poirier (126) and Nick Rosolowski (182) both got four wins.

Bloomer/Colfax travels to Saint Croix Falls on Thursday.



Menomonie’s Greenwood takes fourth all-around

At Holmen, Melody Greenwood took fourth overall in all-around competition for Menomonie at a quad hosted by the Vikings.

Greenwood finished with a score of 32.625 after placing third in the floor exercise (8.9) and uneven bars (8.1) and sixth in the vault (7.7) and balance beam (7.925).

Alexis Anderson was seventh in all-around competition, while Alexa Cummings toook eighth and Chloe Oehler ninth.

The Mustangs finished second as a team with a score of 120.875 with host Holmen winning the team title at 135.525

Anderson placed fourth in the balance beam (8.125), sixth in the vault (7.7), eighth in the uneven bars (6.7) and 12th in the floor exercise (7.3).

Cummings took sixth in the uneven bars (8.0), eighth in the vault (7.65), 10th in the floor exercise (7.5) and 12th in the balance beam (6.175).

Oheler finished seventh in balance beam (7.75) and floor exercise (8.05) while taking 11th in the vault (7.35) and 15th in balance beam (5.95).

Holmen’s Kamryn McNally won the all-around championship with a score of 35.6.

Menomonie returns to action Jan. 18 at an invitational at River Falls.

Boys Basketball

Eau Claire North 68, Menomonie 51

At Menomonie, the Mustangs dropped a Big Rivers Conference game to the Huskies.

Eau Claire North (7-0, 3-0) pulled away by outscoring Menomonie 39-25 after halftime.

Davis Barthen led the Mustangs (4-5, 1-4) with 15 points, with Noah Feddersen adding 14. Brock Thornton was also in double figures with 12.

Ashton Kallstrom led the Huskies with a game-high 34 points.

Menomonie plays at Medford in a nonconference game Tuesday night before returning to conference play at Hudson on Friday.
