St. Croix County Farm-City Day

Ready to welcome visitors to the St. Croix County Farm-City Day on Saturday are, from left to right, Kevin Lee, Lanette Harsdorf, Jim Harsdorf, Mark Mitchell, Brian Lee, Justin Harsdorf, Ryan Bailey, Johnathan Harsdorf and Karissa Harsdorf.

St. Croix County’s Farm-City Day will take place nearby at Trim-Bel Valley Dairy, the rural Spring Valley farm owned and operated by Jim and Lanette Harsdorf and their youngest son, Justin.

The Harsdorfs have three other children who are married with families: Johnathan and Karissa Harsdorf, Kristina and Drew Johnson, and Laura and Tom Benitz — all of whom are involved in some way with agriculture.

Jim started farming in Wisconsin in 1970, when his parents moved their farm to Beldenville, from Stillwater, Minn., with 28 cows and 28 heifers. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1973 with a degree in animal science, Jim returned to farm with his father, Ervin Harsdorf. Over the years the farm expanded to 100 registered Holsteins cows.

In 2003, Harsdorfs purchased their current dairy location, which came with a 200-cow freestall barn and a 28-cow rotary milking parlor. Brian and Kevin Lee manage the day to day operations at the Spring Valley location.

In 2014, Trim-Bel Valley Dairy expanded, constructing a new sand bedded, free stall, cross ventilated, 600-cow capacity barn. The building consists of steel construction with LED lighting, robot feed pushers in alley ways and a Mensch manure vacuum system to clean lanes. The farm presently has a milking herd of 560 registered Holsteins and 30 registered Jerseys.

Jim has served off and on in political office while also farming, starting in 1977, first in the state legislature for 11 years and then serving as the Secretary of the Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection from 2000-2003. Lanette has served on national and state dairy promotion boards, their county Holstein board and their local Hastings creamery board. Justin has recently served abroad as a leader on mission trips around the world with the World Race organization.

“We are honored to be hosting Farm City Days in St. Croix County. We are excited to share our passion for our land, our animals, and our lifestyle with friends and neighbors, all are welcome!”
