A Chippewa County Jail inmate who left the jail to go to work Wednesday, Jan. 3 has been charged with a felony count of escape, and as of the morning of Thursday, Jan. 11, has not been found, court and jail records show.

Ronald J. Walter, 45, of Mondovi was set to be released Feb. 9 but could not be found on Jan. 3, after he left for work at 5 a.m. that day and did not return to the jail that night.

According to a criminal complaint, law enforcement contacted Walter’s employer, Eau Claire contractor Top Notch Roofing, and owner Dale Fichter said Walter usually left his job at 5:30 p.m. and should have arrived back at the jail by 6 p.m.

The next day, Fichter reported that the company car Walter drove had been returned to him, but he was unable to contact Walter. As of Jan. 10, the complaint said, Walter had not returned to the jail.

As of the morning of Thursday, Jan. 11, Walter had not been booked in the Chippewa County Jail. Readers with information on Walter’s whereabouts should contact the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office at 715-726-7701.
