The Boyceville boys basketball team plan to learn from their mistakes last year to boost from a last-place Dunn-St. Croix Conference (DSC) finish to the top half of the conference standings this 2017-18 season.

Coach Ben Luer said experience and leadership from a senior-heavy roster will be the foundation for this year’s Bulldog team.

Those seniors include Bryce Boda (guard, 6-foot-0), Cooper Boesl (forward, 6-foot-3), Jayson Gonzales (guard, 6-foot-1), Bryce Larson (guard, 6-foot-1), Luke Knudtson (forward, 6-foot-5), all of whom were starters on last year’s squad. Knudston was a second team all-conference pick for averaging 20 points per game (ppg) and 13.4 rebounds per game (rpg) as a junior. He is known as an extremely versatile player who can shoot from anywhere on the floor.

Boda is also a sharp shooter, having averaged 16 ppg last season. Boesl provided a strong defensive presence for the Bulldogs, following Knudtson in pull downs with six rpg.

Other returning players who will assist the starting five are juniors Jaden Reisimer (guard, 5-foot-7) and Brady Nye (guard, 6-foot-0), and sophomores Brendan Sempf (guard, 5-foot-7), Logan Knudtson (guard, 6-foot-0) and Cade Klefstad (center, 6-foot-3), all of whom saw off-bench varsity minutes last season.

The roster will ring extremely familiar to last year’s team, having only lost one senior and adding no new players. Kiel Anderson was the only letterwinner lost to graduation. He played in five games last season and averaged just over two points per game.

The Bulldogs wrapped up last season with a 5-18 record and went 2-12 in the DSC. Their season came to a close in the first round of regional play with a 78-61 loss to Plum City/Elmwood.

Coach Luer said the Dunn-St. Croix Conference will again be very competitive from top to bottom.

“Where we fit in the conference will depend on how much our seniors learned from last year and how much we can gel as a team,” he said. “Every year we want to be the best defensive team we can be. This year, we want to put complete games together, both offensively and defensively.”

Boyceville hits the road for their season-opener against Prairie Farm on Thursday. They continue on the road to play Bruce on Tuesday, Dec. 5 and return home to host Colfax for the conference opener on Thursday, Dec. 7.
