The Colfax boys’ basketball team will have much more varsity experience on the floor this season than last.

At the start of the 2016-17 season, the Vikings only had two varsity experienced players on the court. As a result, a number of younger players were provided time on the floor last season, which coach Garrett Maas believes has paved the way for this year’s team to have a much stronger sense of chemistry.

The Vikings’ season ended last year at the hands of Glenwood City in the first round of regional play. They finished with a 7-16 overall record and landed second to last in the Dunn-St. Croix (DSC) Conference, winning just three conference matches.

This season, Maas sees four or five DSC teams in the running for the conference title, but believes the Vikings have just as good of a chance to be in the mix at the end of the season.

“I think that this is the most balanced the conference has been in a long time,” Maas remarked. “I would be shocked if the conference champion had less than three losses.”

Maas said the Vikings’ main goal is to play hard and work together to improve on last year’s conference record and contend for the DSC title.

Though the Vikings move on without the assistance of Jacob Larson, one of the two letterwinners lost to graduation and leading scorer of last year’s team, six letterwinners return to the court, three of whom were starters on last season’s team.

Junior guard George Scharlau is among the three returning starters, who averaged 11.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season. Scharlau was a second team all-conference selection in the DSC last season. Scharlau will be accompanied by classmate Ben Thompson, who averaged nine points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season. Senior Treyton Teige, who averaged 4.7 points and five rebounds per game, will be among the starting five.

Other returning players include senior Marcus Reisdorf, junior Luke Heidorn and sophomore Ed Hydukovich. Maas said both Heidorn and Hydukovich made vast improvements over the summer and are expected to see a lot of minutes on the varsity floor.

Senior Taylor Sarauer, juniors Jackson Hellman, Trevor Rothbauer and sophomore Noah Albricht have joined the team for the first time and will have the opportunity to show what they can contribute this season.

Tuesday marked the start of Colfax’s season, as they traveled for a nonconference matchup against Ellsworth. They return after the holiday break for their first home game against Thorp on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
