The Chi-Hi/Menomonie girls hockey team fell behind early and never recovered in a 2-0 loss to Superior on Tuesday evening at Chippewa Area Ice Arena.
The Spartans scored both of their goals in the first period and held Chi-Hi/Menomonie (0-2-0) scoreless to notch the nonconference victory.
Superior’s Addie Young gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead with a goal assisted by Alee Milinkovich-Gray just 4:52 into the game. Rose Ion doubled Superior’s lead by scoring off an assist by Brooklyn Burger just under three minutes later.
Chi-Hi/Menomonie tried to muster a rally, registering six shots on goal in the second period and four in the third, but none found their way past Superior goalkeeper Autumn Sears. They had 16 shots on goal in the game.
“Going into this game we hoped we’d get a couple pucks to bounce our way,” Chi-Hi/Menomonie coach Tony Menard said. “We just couldn’t get any to bounce our way.”
Haley Frank made 23 saves for Chi-Hi/Menomonie, who will face Sun Prairie at Waunakee/DeForest Ice Rink on Friday.
“That’s where you want to be,” Menard said of his defense’s performance. “The defense played where we needed it to play.”
