The Red Cedar Speedway presented the WISSOTA Race of Champions qualifier sponsored by ServPro Of Barron, Rusk and Dunn Counties. The WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks each competed for a starting position in the Race of Champions at the 2018 WISSOTA 100 in September.

The RCS Hornets were also in action. Feature winners included Mike Prochnow, Kevin Adams twice, Tommy Richards, Mike Knudtson, Adam Pratt, and Jeremy Johnson.

Move of the race

The WISSOTA Late Models saw an aborted start attempt which collected the entire inside row behind heat one winner and feature pole sitter, Rick Hanestad. On the second attempt, Prochnow made a bold and fantastic move into turn one as he split Hanestad and outside front row starter, John Kaanta. It was the move of the race as he set off into the night on the high side and drove to the victory.

It was Hanestad in second for several laps before Kaanta was able to move up in front of him to claim the runner up position. Hanestad held firm in third over Jake Redetzke and heat two winner Mark Hessler in fifth.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were swept by Adams, who drove from his pole starting position to a dominating victory. It was the outside front row starter, Kerry Halopka running in second early as Ashley Anderson ran in third. Jordan Hessler showed he was fast as he ran down Anderson and caught Halopka. As he moved beside the runner up to take over the position, Cory Williams broke down and drew the only caution of the event.

The lap six restart saw Adams well in control again as Hessler drove under Halopka for second. Anderson and Halopka began a side-by-side battle for third which lasted multiple laps before Anderson took over the position. Halopka finished fourth over Josh Hessler who rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stock heats were topped by Chad Gullixson and Adam Soltis as Ben Hillman and Gullixson brought them to green in the feature. It was third place starter Tommy Richards who made the early move and took over the lead, and although he was challenged multiple times by Hillman, he was able to drive to his sixth feature win in 2018. Hillman looked very strong taking second position as Jesse Redetzke rode home in third. Chad Gullixson bested Dan Gullikson for the fourth position in what was a very good race long intense battle on the high side by the two Super Stock veterans. Notably, Dan Nissalke parlayed troubles in his heat to a sixth-place finish after starting dead last in the feature.

Major crash

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds saw Gunnar Watkins, Karl Kolek, and Kevin Adams all win heats. The feature was marred by five separate caution flags which kept the pack tight, specifically for the third position. It was Watkins leading at the outset, but fifth starting Adams took the lead on lap three as Tommy Richards followed into second. A series of cautions for single car incidents ensued before a restart saw a major crash in turn two, drawing the yellow for the fifth and final time. Jesse Bryan, Josh Wahlstrom, Justin Claussen, and Chris Johnson, were unable to continue as Johnson received medical care. Calvin Iverson, Shadow Kitchner, and Travis Anderson were also collected in the incident but were able to rejoin the race.

Four laps remained as Adams drove undaunted to his 488th career feature win over Richards. The battle for third was spectacular as Jake Smith, Watkins, and Nick Koehler swapped positions and lines on the track multiple times in terrific racing action. They ran two and three wide to the checkered as Smith claimed third over Watkins and Koehler.

Hunter VanGilder won the WISSOTA Street Stock heat as Mike Knudtson drew the pole for the feature. It was Knudtson early, but Danny Richards was spun and Kolby Kiehl was called for the foul. The restart saw a Jess Seim spin but back under green, Knudtson lead the field. Richards used the high line to move in to challenge for the lead as VanGilder lurked in his shadow. Richards was able to secure the point as Knudtson and Van Gilder began to race door to door for the next four laps. On lap eight, Richards’ car went up in smoke and Knudtson took the lead.

A Jess Seim spin slowed the action for the final time and the restart was lead by Knudtson over VanGilder, Ashley Wahlstrom, a recovering Kiehl, and Ron Hanestad. VanGilder wasn’t going away as he moved to the high side and pulled even with the leader on the back stretch of the last lap. The two raced side by side through three and four but Knudtson proved too strong to the checkers. VanGilder finished a very strong second over Kiehl, Hanestad, and Wahlstrom.

First feature win

The WISSOTA Pure Stock heat was won by Kent Harmon as Adam Pratt scored his first Red Cedar Speedway feature win. It was Dean Pronschinske in the early lead but he slipped up the track off of turn two and Pratt drove under him to take the point. Harmon moved into second and chased the leader and looked below him to challenge for the win. Pratt was able to hold him off as Tyler Hallquist broke down and drew the caution flag with nine laps completed. The restart once again saw Harmon challenge with Pratt holding true. Harmon broke down late leaving Pratt alone up front with Pronschinske digging hard to join the fray. It was Pratt at the checkered flag over Pronschinske, Scott VanGilder, and Jason Hoyt.

In a repeat of the week before, the RCS Hornet heats were topped by Derrek Krumrie and Jeremy Johnson as Johnson won yet another feature. It was Bradley York early over Ross Hoffman but Krumrie drove to second and Johnson into third. Johnson then took second, swept past the leader into first, and drove to the checkered flag. York maintained second position over Krumrie in third. It was Jason Helgeson holding off a charging Lucas Brackin rounding out the top five.

The Red Cedar Speedway takes the next two Fridays off and returns to racing action on Friday, June 29, with the Cowbell Street Stock Series Special along with Military Night and Kids Club sponsored by Tri-Mart, Cubby’s Bar, and 24-7 Telecom. The WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, and Street Stocks will all be racing. There will be no Pure Stocks or Hornets on the card.
