On this day in 1945, most of the world celebrated Victory in Europe Day, when German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their arms. Soviet forces were still fighting the Nazi occupation, and they celebrate victory on May 9.

President Harry S. Truman announced on radio that Nazi Germany's forces had surrendered, and that "the flags of freedom fly all over Europe."
