The Woodstock Music and Art Festival took place in Bethel, New York, 50 years ago Aug. 15-18, 1969, as 32 acts performed for an audience of about 400,000 people, making the event a pivotal moment in popular music history and a turning point for the counterculture generation. Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin were among a few of the acts that performed over the course of the four-day festival.
