Eugene “Fuzzy” Phillip Swoboda, 91, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
He was born Sept.24, 1926, to John and Mary (Rubenzer) Swoboda, the 10th of 13 children, in the town of Tilden where he attended St. Peter’s Catholic School. He joined the Army when he was 18, served in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of the V.F.W. Chippewa Post #1038. He farmed in his younger years and worked at the Chippewa Woolen Mill until the Chippewa plant closed. He then worked at Uniroyal/Goodrich for 27 years until his retirement.
Fuzzy came from a musical family and together with his father and several of his brothers and sisters, played many musical instruments. His favorite was the push button and piano accordion. They played at wedding dances and provided entertainment for many family functions.
On Feb. 14, 1952, he married his sweetheart, Dyllis “Tap” Goulet. They celebrated 66 years of marriage and had seven children. Bradley (Wendy) of Ashville, Ohio, Barbara (Del) Zwiefelhofer, Elk Mound, Linda (Jerry) Oestreich, Elk Mound, David (Susan), Jim Falls, Randy (Sue Schemenauer), Chippewa Falls, Jeffrey, Cadott and Steven (Bonnie), Chippewa Falls.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his sister, Sister Viola Swoboda; sisters-in-law, Sue Swoboda and Helen Swoboda; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandsons, Joey Swoboda and Troy Mogan; brothers and sisters-in-law, August (Dorie) Swoboda, Walter Swoboda, Norbert (Lillian) Swoboda, John Swoboda, Jr.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn (Julius) Meinen, Florence (Arnold) Harings, Leona (Michael) Schneider, Bernadette (Albert) Nimmer, Marie Swoboda, Dorothy (Clement) Bowe and Eleanor (Willard) Bowe.
Besides his love for music, Fuzzy’s favorite pastimes were playing cards or challenging you to a wicked game of Aggravation “Bang Bang.” His spirit will always be present and he will be fondly remembered as the tradition is passed on to future generations.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Jesse Burish will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Entombment will be in Hope Mausoleum in Chippewa Falls. Military rites will be conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the Horan Funeral Home, Chippewa Falls with a Christian vigil service at 7 p.m.
