EAU CLAIRE — Helmer Robert Haroldson, 82, of Cornell, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire surrounded by his family.
He was born on March 18, 1929 in Chicago to Helmer and Helen (Ponick) Haroldson.
Helmer served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean Conflict veteran and was a member of the Cornell American Legion.
Helmer married Gay Lou Bernier on Oct. 28, 1948. They had two daughters.
Helmer worked for many years at the Paper Mill in Cornell and then worked at Uniroyal until he retired. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Helmer was a member of the Cornell Area Fire Department for 17 years serving as Assistant Chief for part of that time. He also served on the Police and Fire Commission For the City of Cornell for several years.
Helmer was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, in his later years Helmer enjoyed watching football, Nascar and spoiling his great grandchildren.
He is survived by: his daughters, Cindie (Dennis) Klass and Dee Dee (Steve) Shackleton; five grandsons, Dennis (Michelle) Klass, Terry (Lori) Hakes, Tracy (Angela) Klass, Jeremy (Sheila) Shackleton and Lee (Eva) Shackleton; 13 great-grandchildren; 12 brothers and sisters, Virginia (John) Ellis, Jackie Woods, Tom Haroldson, Rodney (Florence) Haroldson, Jerry (Harriet) Potaczek, John (Terese) Potaczek, Alois (Heidi) Potaczek, Tim (Sally) Potaczek, Doug Potaczek, Cynthia (Louie) Yetter, Sandra (Albert) Larson and Joann (Carl) Olynick.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Gay Lou, on Jan. 23, 2000; his parents; and brothers, Joey and Alan Potaczek.
Helmer will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell with Rev. Brahm Semmler Smith officiating. Interment will take place in the Cornell Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Cornell American Legion.
Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 at the Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell and also one hour before services Tuesday at the Church.
