JoAnn T. Statz, 85, of Chippewa Falls, town of Seymour, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
JoAnn was born to Joseph and Anna (Eder) Marek of Cadott Sept. 29, 1932. JoAnn married Vincent Statz Aug. 25, 1953, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cadott. They were blessed with 10 daughters and three sons.
JoAnn attended Cadott High School, and after graduation she attended a technical college in Eau Claire. From there she went to work for Tom Tabola Ford in Cadott.
As a young woman she loved to play cards, dance and roller skate. She met Vince at a roller skating rink in the town of LaFayette. After they married, JoAnn and Vince took over the Statz family farm where they raised their 13 children. On the farm, she loved to garden and spent hours tending her rows of vegetables, planting trees, and collecting monarch butterfly caterpillars with her grandchildren. She taught her children and grandkids to cook, sew and quilt, but most of all she encouraged her children to excel at school, to study music, play in sports, and travel.
JoAnn loved to have her house full of family and friends. When anyone stopped by, she’d prepare a meal of venison bologna with maple syrup, cabbage salad, sliced bread, and warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
JoAnn loved to travel, and she passed on that love to her children and grandchildren. Because of the variety of places her children lived, she was able to visit Europe, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Philippines, and many places throughout the U.S.
JoAnn was dearly loved by her family and her many friends who will miss her ready smile and generous spirit.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, Vince; two sons, Charles (Jennifer) Statz of Wauwatosa, Wis. and Phillip (Cristi) Statz of Eau Claire; nine daughters, Elizabeth (John) Erickson of Spring Valley, Catherine Statz of St. Paul, Minn., Sandy Statz of Ecuador, Nancy (Carlos) Leon of Brookfield, Wis., Diane (Jeff) Brostrom of Lacey, Wash., Renee (Rakesh) Sreemivasam of Madison, Wis., Barbara (David) Krause of Cedarburg, Wis., Jacqueline Statz (Dan Hoerl) of Middleton, Wis., and Pamela Statz (Justin Graham) of Portland, Ore.; one son-in-law, David Carroll of Takoma Park, Md.; three sisters, Lucille (William) Roshell of Chippewa Falls, Agnes (“Art” Stanley) Ciolkosz of Chetek, Wis., and Laura (Randy) Kimphbech of Arkansas; one brother, Robert (Jeanine) Marek of Cadott; 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
JoAnn was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Statz; one son, Timothy Statz; her parents; and two sisters, Rosemary Poppe and Ellen Marek.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at St. Bridget’s Church in the town of Seymour. The Rev. Eugene Wolf will be celebrant of the funeral Mass with interment in the church cemetery.
