A father of teenagers, two memorable moms, a doctor, an entrepreneur, a jokester — they are among the lives lost to COVID-19.

It took nearly five months for the state to reach 1,000 pandemic deaths, in August. The 2,000 mark came less than three months later. The state passed 3,000 deaths Saturday and is projected to top 5,000 by Christmas.

Here are the stories of some of those lost in the Madison area, as told by the Wisconsin State Journal.
