U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin on Wednesday joined a sudden swell of Democratic senators urging Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., to resign after seven women have accused him of unwanted kissing or groping.

Baldwin, D-Madison, said in a Twitter post Wednesday: "I believe it is best for Sen. Franken to resign."

She became the seventh of at least 30 Democratic senators to do so Wednesday. The chorus followed a Wednesday morning report from Politico in which a seventh woman accused Franken of unwanted advances.

After the Democratic senators called for his resignation, Franken's office said it would make an announcement Thursday -- but did not reveal anything further.

The accuser, a former Democratic congressional aide whom Politico did not name, said Franken tried to forcibly kiss her in 2006.

When she avoided his advance, the woman said Franken -- a former comedian and Saturday Night Live star -- told her "It’s my right as an entertainer."

Franken responded in a statement to Politico: "This allegation is categorically not true and the idea that I would claim this as my right as an entertainer is preposterous."

The flood of allegations against Franken began last month, when a TV and radio host, Leeann Tweeden, publicly alleged Franken kissed and groper her without her consent in 2006.

Baldwin said at that time that she supported an ethics investigation of Franken and that she was “glad to see that Sen. Franken immediately apologized" for it.

The first-term Baldwin is up for re-election in 2018.
