"I'm in a competitive district, and I think that makes me a very good legislator...but when you have gerrymandering...[elected officials] can be as extreme as they want, [and] that doesn't help us get things done," Senator Janet Bewley (D-Mason) said during a Civil Dialogue discussion on the 2020 State of the State address. Governor Tony Evers's announced a People's Maps Commission during his address which creates a non-partisan committee of residents to redraw Wisconsin's electoral map. "It's constitutionally the Legislature's responsibility to draw the maps," Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) argued. "The idea that redistricting somehow is this massive gerrymandering issue that really puts Democrats at a competitive disadvantage...is quite frankly nonsense."
