On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges held an informational hearing on "International Security in Institutions of Higher Education" featuring U.S. Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) as one of the expert speakers. Committee chair, Senator Roger Roth (R-Appleton), prefaced the hearing by highlighting the numerous security breaches over the past few years that have led to increasing concerns of foreign interference and threats to universities around the nation, especially those that conduct sensitive research. U.S. Rep. Gallagher emphasized that the UW-System is well positioned to be a world-leading regional technology hub and should seek to become a "semi-conductor superpower given how important chips are to geo-political competition." However, Gallagher noted that it won't happen if Wisconsin's K-12 and higher education systems can't produce workers or guarantee that "federal government dollars aren't flowing to Chinese spies or Chinese technology that's going to be use agains us."
