University of Wisconsin defensive lineman Billy Hirschfeld will not return to the Badgers for his senior season, a UW official confirmed Thursday.

Hirschfeld took time away from the team in November for personal reasons. He posted a blog entry to Twitter last week that stated he's no longer playing football and has shifted his focus to becoming a journalist. He's still taking classes at UW.

Hirschfeld played in 25 career games, recording seven tackles, one for a loss, and one pass breakup. While he only played sparingly last season, he could have provided added depth after the Badgers also lost their top three defensive ends from 2017.
