McDonell Track and Field Invite 5-7-13

Nick Zander is out in front of the pack in the 1,600-meter run on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Dorais Field.

COLFAX — The McDonell Macks boys track and field team used quality, not quantity, to their advantage on Thursday at a WIAA Division 3 track and field sectional meet.

The Macks boys won three events and had a total of six top-3 finishes to propel them to a sectional team championship by one point over Eau Claire Regis and Spring Valley.

McDonell got victories from Nick Zander (1,600 and 800-meter run) and the 3,200-meter relay team of Sam Bleskachek, Grant Pulver, Zander and John Polus to go along with individual runner-up finishes for Bleskachek (800-meter run) and Pulver (3,200-meter run) as well as a third-place finish by Pulver in the 1,600-meter run.

“The thing about those guys is they’re so determined and they hate to lose,” McDonell coach Amber Schwartz said.

Those top finishes were just enough to accumulate 53 points, one more than the Ramblers and the Cardinals.

McDonell also had two girls advance to state as Lexi Raihle (3,200-meter run) and Ambelique Matthews (shot put) are moving on after fourth-place finishes helped them punch their tickets to La Crosse.

“Ambie threw really, really well and clinched that fourth spot in the shot and that’s really exciting for her, she was really wanting it really bad,” Schwartz said. “Lexi in the two-mile she ran really, really well. That was a (personal best) for her.”

In addition to the Macks, Cadott will also be well represented at the state track meet as the Hornets qualified for state in nine different events, led by sectional championships for Lauren Manier (100-meter hurdles) and Lexi Siverling (high jump).

The Hornets got second-place finishes from Ben Kyes (110-meter hurdles) and Jordan Spindler (shot put), third-place finishes from  Manier (300-meter hurdles), Amanda Bremness (pole vault) and a trio of fourth-place finishes from Kyes (triple jump) and a pair of relay teams as the boys 400-meter relay (Jake Roth, Tyler Pecha, Adam Krouse and Brandon Peterlik) and the girls 1,600-meter relay team (Manier, Elizabeth Kyes, Tori Rykal and Kayla Dubiel) grabbed the final qualifying spot.

Cornell/Lake Holcombe’s Lexi Moussette advanced to state with a third-place finish in the girls 1,600-meter run, as did New Auburn’s Jesse Sweeter with a third place of his own in the 200-meter dash. The New Auburn boys 1,600-meter relay team of Cody Baldry, Christian Weast, Sean Rae and Sweeter finished in fifth place, just missing the final qualification spot, as did Rykal in the triple jump and Roth in the pole vault.

Thorp’s Breeanna Kulesa finished in third place in the pole vault. Dakota Lindgren took fifth in the high jump. For Gilman, the 400-meter relay team of Nathan Webster, Tyler Elwood, Jarrod Kulesa and Dean Klimeck and Klimeck individually in the high jump each finished sixth.

Cadott was seventh in the boys team standings with 38 points, New Auburn was 21st, Cornell/Lake Holcombe was 24th. Thorp was 28th and GIlman was 29th.

In the girls team standings, Cadott took fourth with 55 points, Cornell/Lake Holcombe was 12th with 16.5 points, McDonell was 17th and New Auburn was 31st. Thorp was 25th.

The WIAA state track meet takes place next Friday and Saturday on the campus of UW-La Crosse.
