The McDonell and Bloomer girls basketball teams each earned No. 3 seeds in their respective divisional brackets as playoff pairings were released by the WIAA on Sunday afternoon
The Macks and Blackhawks were third seeds in their Division 5 and 3 half-sectionals, respectively, while Chi-Hi and Stanley-Boyd each earned home opening-round matchups.
McDonell (16-4) is a No. 3 seed in the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser half-sectional and opens postseason play in the Division 5 regional quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at home against No. 14 New Auburn (8-10). Two other Chippewa County teams are in action in the same half-sectional as No. 11 Lake Holcombe (8-9) is on the road at No. 6 Owen-Withee (14-6) and No. 12 Cornell (8-11) plays at No. 5 Prentice (13-7).
Flambeau and Rib Lake earned the top two seeds in the region. The Macks host the unbeaten Falcons on Monday evening and defeated Flambeau in the regional finals last season.
Bloomer (17-3) is a No. 3 seed in the River Falls half-sectional and earns a bye to the regional semifinals on Friday, Feb. 23 where the Blackhawks will face the winner of the quarterfinal game between No. 6 Prescott and No. 11 Ellsworth. Hayward is the top seed in the region with Middle Border Conference leader Saint Croix Central as the second seed. The Blackhawks play at Hayward on Friday and would clinch a share of the Heart O’North Conference title with a win over the Hurricanes. Hayward defeated Bloomer 33-32 on Jan. 5. Since that game, the Blackhawks have won 10 games in a row. Bloomer advanced to the Division 3 state semifinals last season.
Chi-Hi (13-7) is a No. 8 seed in the Eau Claire Memorial half-sectional and will host No. 9 Appleton West in the Division 1 regional finals on Feb. 23. The winner of that matchup moves on to the regional finals to face either top seeded and defending state champion Appleton North or No. 16 Oshkosh North. Chi-Hi enters the final week of the regular season tied with Hudson for first place in the Big Rivers Conference. The Cardinals play at Wausau West on Tuesday before closing out league play at Eau Claire North on Friday. Last season Chi-Hi advanced to the sectional finals before falling to Appleton North.
Stanley-Boyd (13-8) is a No. 7 seed in the Division 4 Altoona half-sectional and will host No. 10 Augusta in the regional quarterfinals with the winner advancing to the semifinals to play at No. 2 Durand.
All regional finals will be played on Saturday, Feb. 24 with regional champions advancing to sectional semifinals on Thursday, March 1 at neutral-site locations. Those winners play in the sectional finals on Saturday, March 3 with sectional champions advancing to the state tournament, played at the Resch Center in Green Bay from March 8-10.
