BARRON — The McDonell boys cross country team had five of the top-13 finishers as they took second place at the Cameron cross country invite on Thursday afternoon.
Isaac Bohaty led the way for McDonell with a fourth-place finish in 17 minutes, 52.35 seconds. Sam Bleskachek (18:13.20) took sixth, Zach Ruf was 10th, Seth Schemenauer finished 11th and Ben Ruf was 14th to round out the scoring for the Macks. McDonell’s 44 team points trailed only Chequamegon with 23.
Lake Holcombe/Cornell took seventh as a team with 199 points and was led by Sam Peterson in 37th place. Chequamegon’s Kevin Koski won the race with a time of 16:38.94.
“The kids are showing improvement,” McDonell coach Marty Bushland said.
Julia Verbick finished in fifth place (22:00.23) to lead the way for the McDonell girls, who finished fifth as a team with 116 points. Lake Holcombe/Cornell finished one spot ahead of the Macks in fourth, scoring 96 points. Thia Moreen led the charge for the Knights in 12th place, followed by Lexi Moussette in 14th. St. Croix Falls’ Sophie Klein won the race in 21:01.69 while Chequamegon took the team title with 31 points.
Hudson 4, Chi-Hi 0
At Hudson, the Raiders scored three goals in the first half on their way to a Big Rivers Conference victory over the Cardinals.
A tight game early, the Raiders scored a pair of goals around the 20-minute mark to grab a 2-0 lead and extended that lead to 3-0 by halftime. Chi-Hi coach Ben Goeman said after a tough first half he was happy with the way his team responded in the second half and played against a talented Raiders team.
Chi-Hi (3-5-1, 2-3 BRC) hosts Menomonie on Tuesday.
Chi-Hi/McDonell 90, Rice Lake 74
At Rice Lake, the Cardinals grabbed a Big Rivers Conference dual victory over the Warriors.
Chi-Hi/McDonell grabbed seven event victories on their way to the win. Erica Shakal (200 freestyle and 100 fly) and Lily Borgenheimer (200 individual medley and 400 freestyle) each scored two wins. Ashton Ott (100 freestyle) and Haley Jones (100 backstroke) were victorious, as was the 400 freestyle relay team of Nadine Porzondek, Ella Borgenheimer, Ott and Shakal.
The Cardinals host Eau Claire Memorial next Thursday.
Nowak takes fifth at River Falls
At River Falls, Chi-Hi’s Bre Nowak finished in fifth place overall at a Big Rivers Conference event held at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course.
Nowak finished the day with a 45, six strokes away from River Falls’ Sidney Brunholzl for medalist honors.
Megan Frey shot a 52, Cheyenne Mankus carded a 56 and Caitlin Swim finished the day with a 60 for the Cardinals as they took sixth place as a team with a 213. River Falls won the team title with a 184.
Chi-Hi is back in action Monday in an event at Rice Lake.
Altoona 6, Chi-Hi 1
At Altoona, the Cardinals fell in a dual with the Rails.
Katie Govin scored Chi-Hi’s lone win of the day at No. 3 singles by defeating Cassidy Herman 6-1, 6-1. Sarah Altmann went to three sets at No. 4 singles before falling to Mady Amidon.
Chi-Hi (7-8) hosts Eau Claire North on Tuesday.
